Five CMAs receive a $2,000 Regional Youth Scholarship

Quebec City, April 26, 2012 – In order to make it easier for CMA graduates to move to and become an active part of regional communities, the Foundation of the Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec (CMA) and Place aux jeunes en région (PAJR) have awarded $2,000 scholarships to five young CMAs who have chosen to practice the profession in a region outside metropolitan areas and become actively involved in developing their communities.

The recipients of the 2011 scholarships are: Pascale Bernier (Abitibi-Témiscamingue), Mélanie Gélinas (Côte-Nord), Gwendalina Langlois (Mauricie), Keiven Tremblay (Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean) and Stéphane Veillette (Centre-du-Québec). Their exemplary careers and strong attachment to their native or adopted region show that it is possible to enjoy an exciting career in regions outside Quebec's metropolitan areas and that a CMA can become a leader by playing a positive role in his or her community.

“For me, working in one of Quebec's regions is the perfect way to boost our full potential as individuals and participate in the growth of businesses," explains scholarship recipient Gwendalina Langlois. Her persuasive words are similar to those of another scholarship winner, Stéphane Veillette: “I think it is important to get young people interested in businesses in their region; they are often not aware of the products that are made or the jobs that are available there. They wrongly believe that the best jobs are in the big cities. Our role is to help them discover all of the possibilities that are available to them.”

The CMA Order Foundation wanted to invest in this scholarship program to encourage the practice of the CMA profession across the entire province of Quebec and use CMA leadership to promote regional development in response to the exodus of young people from areas outside Quebec’s major cities. Anyone who would like to apply for the 2012 scholarships can find information on the PAJR Web site: www.placeauxjeunes.qc.ca/cma. A total of seven scholarships worth $2,000 will be awarded.

Mathieu Vigneault, Executive Director of Place aux jeunes en région, Charles Auger, FCMA, Chair of the Order's Board, the representatives of the four "Governor" donor companies of the CMA Foundation, which are linked to CMA University Scholarships for Regional Youth, including Suzanne Blanchet, President and Chief Executive Officer, Cascades Tissue Group, Daniel Lefebvre, Professional Clientele Manager, Desjardins Group, Bertrand Dubé, CMA, Director, Finance, Boulangeries Weston Gadoua Inc., and Patricia Herrbach, Human Resources Manager, IT International Telecom, followed by the four winners attending the ceremony, Mélanie Gélinas, CMA, Accountant at Rio Tinto, Iron Ore Company, in Sept-Îles, Stéphane Veillette, CMA, Comptroller at Intral in Princeville, Gwendalina Langlois, CMA, Comptroller at Johnston-Vermette Groupe Conseil in Trois-Rivières, and Keiven Tremblay, CMA, Director of Finance at Cervo-Polygaz and Groupe PGS 2009 in Chicoutimi, and finally, Michel Verreault, FCMA, Vice Chair of the Board of CMA Foundation.

The CMA Foundation celebrates the achievement of its goal of raising $2 million in support for the next generation of CMAs

Montreal, March 22, 2011 – All of the key actors in the first major fundraising campaign of the Quebec CMA Order Foundation enthusiastically assembled recently to mark the achievement of this undertaking, which many considered daring, if not bold.

The three Co-Chairs of the Campaign Cabinet, Dino Dello Sbarba, FCMA (1st on the left), President and Chief Operating Officer, Dairy Products Division (Canada, International), Saputo Inc., Luc Richard, FCMA (2nd on the right), Operations Director, Ubisoft – Québec Studio, and Alphonse M. Galluccio, FCMA (1st on the right), Vice President, Corporate Governance Practice, DECIMAL, as well as the Chair of the Board of Directors and the Executive Director of the CMA Foundation, Josée De La Durantaye, FCMA, and François Renauld, FCMA, proudly display the amount raised to date as part of the 2010-2014 fundraising campaign.

The CMA community mobilizes
“Although it will not end until 2014, our first major fundraising campaign is already a success. Thanks to the extraordinary support of the CMA community and the many companies that have aligned themselves with the values and objectives that drive us, we have now actually raised the sum of $2,068,300 and thus exceeded our ambitious objective of two million dollars! We can proudly say that our mission has been accomplished,” declared Dino Dello Sbarba, FCMA, Campaign Co-Chair and President and Chief Operating Officer, Dairy Products Division (Canada, International), of Saputo Inc.

236 scholarships and awards presented in the last two years
From the very beginning, the CMA Foundation had planned to launch a fundraising campaign that would provide it with the funds it needs to achieve its goals and build an endowment fund. This is a pioneering achievement by the Foundation, since the 2010-2014 campaign is not only the first in the short history of the Foundation, but also the very first fundraising campaign orchestrated by the foundation of a professional order. This extraordinary feat has enabled the Foundation to present 236 scholarships and awards to future and new CMAs since its creation two years ago. These scholarships and awards total $251,800, which is twice the amount that was previously awarded to the next generation of CMAs. Thus, the Foundation is on the right track – and now has the means – to achieve its objective of tripling the support it gives to the most promising hopefuls of the CMA profession. More convinced than ever of the relevance of its mission, the Foundation does not intend to content itself with the funding it has raised to date.

A profession in step with Quebec’s economic development
It should be noted that the Foundation has also broken new ground in terms of the scholarships it offers. In addition to its scholarships for academic achievement and university research, the Foundation joined forces with Place aux jeunes en région and the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest to launch the CMA University Scholarships for Regional Youth, which are intended to support Quebec's regional development, and the CMA Entrepreneurial Awards. Along with these scholarships, the Foundation also created the CMA World Passport Scholarships, which are intended to encourage students who have opted for the CMA profession to study at a university outside Canada, thereby giving wings to talented students and contributing to Quebec’s economic development.

Fourteen institutions, including many major employers of CMA professionals, did not hesitate to invest in the development of the next generation of CMAs and join the core group of Governors of the Foundation. They are: Air Canada, AXA, Bell Canada, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Cascades, CGI, the Desjardins Group, Industrial Alliance, IT International Telecom, National Bank, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Saputo, Scotia Bank and Weston Foods.

As shown by Vincent Arlas, CMA, Senior Associate, Consulting & Deals at PwC (PriceWaterhouseCoopers), being the recipient of an award from the Foundation has an extraordinary ripple effect on an individual's pride and feeling of belonging. “I am proud to have chosen a profession that knows how to recognize effort and achievement. The award I received strengthens my attachment to the CMA profession, of which I am now a very enthusiastic and convincing ambassador.”

The CMA community makes its actions count as part of the first major fundraising campaign of the Foundation of the Quebec CMA Order

Montreal, April 27, 2010 – With great enthusiasm, all the key actors in the first major fundraising campaign of the Foundation of the Quebec CMA Order assembled last Thursday at the Pointe-à-Callière museum in Montreal to officially launch the campaign and announce that more than $1,460,000 in pledges over a five-year period have already been raised.

“The incredible mobilization of our members is sending a message that will have an impact on the actions taken with the business community, which greatly benefits from CMA expertise,” pointed out Dino Dello Sbarba, FCMA, Co-Chair of the campaign. All of the Order’s members have in fact been asked to support the Foundation’s projects and in a gesture of solidarity, they have answered this call in great numbers by pledging to pay no less than $750,000 over a five year period.

This has definitely given fresh impetus to the campaign’s solicitation of businesses, as many of them have not hesitated to invest in the development of the next generation. The Desjardins Group, which employs over 200 CMAs, is a large donor in this campaign. Other businesses have followed suit as Governors: AXA, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Cascades, Industrial Alliance, IT International Telecom, Saputo and Weston Foods. Finally, the contributions of Ambassadors are also worth mentioning, including those from Agropur, CAE, Danone, Kraft, Lassonde and Ubisoft.

The Foundation of the Quebec CMA Order was created in 2008 with the goal of encouraging excellence, contributing to the development of the profession and the community and investing in the next generation. To achieve its objective of raising $2 million by 2014, the Foundation relies on a solid campaign cabinet co-chaired by Dino Dello Sbarba, FCMA, President and Chief Operating Officer, Dairy Products (Canada, International), at Saputo, Alphonse M. Galluccio, FCMA, Vice President, Corporate Governance Practice, at Decimal, and Luc Richard, Director of Operations, at Ubisoft Québec.

The funds raised from the campaign will make it possible to present three times more scholarships and awards to CMAs and future CMAs, but also break new ground by creating new scholarships: scholarships to finance university studies abroad, business start-up scholarships, in collaboration with the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest, and academic scholarships to encourage young CMAs to settle in regional areas outside the big cities, in collaboration with Place aux jeunes en région. “That is how the Foundation is contributing to the economic development of Quebec and investing in extremely valuable capital, the next generation!,” explains President-Executive Director of the Quebec CMA Order and Executive Director of the Foundation, François Renauld, FCMA.

As testified by Marc Journeault, CMA, Doctorand in Economics and Management at the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), specialist in management control tools for sustainable development and himself a recipient of a scholarship from the Order, the Foundation’s scholarship program will have a significant impact on motivating CMAs and future CMAs to improve their knowledge and on strengthening their feeling of belonging to the CMA community. “To that end, he concluded, the creation of the Foundation was absolutely necessary for the CMA profession.”

The Foundation of the Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec (CMA) and Place aux jeunes en région join forces to make it easier for graduates to move to regional areas of Quebec

Quebec City, March 9, 2010 – The Foundation of the Ordre des comptables en management accrédités du Québec (CMA) and Place aux jeunes en région (PAJR) are joining forces to encourage graduates to move to areas outside of Quebec’s large city centres. The objective of the five-year agreement between the two organizations is to award university scholarships to CMA graduates who choose to practice their profession and become involved in regional communities. In 2010, five $2,000 scholarships will be awarded.

For the Executive Director of the CMA Foundation, François Renauld, FCMA, “the partnership with Place aux jeunes en région is truly innovative. Not only will we be able to promote the practice of the CMA profession throughout the entire province, but make use of the leadership of CMAs at the same time to help develop regions dealing with an exodus of young people.”

Place aux jeunes en région is grateful that a profession considers the issue of graduate migration to regional areas to be important. “The Foundation of the CMA Order is breaking new ground by offering scholarships and thus, taking real action,” says Benjamin Bussière, Executive Director of PAJR. We hope that this kind of involvement will inspire other professional orders to encourage their members to settle and practice their professions in regional areas,” he continued.

PAJR will be in charge of the logistics surrounding the awarding of the scholarships. The application deadline for the year in progress is December 31, 2010. The application form and all other necessary information can be found on the PAJR Internet site.
